In February 2022, Carole was awarded a ‘Developing your Creative Practice’ grant by the Arts Council of England to complete Dumb.
Dumb was shortlisted by writer Kate Clanchy, agent/poet Isobel Dixon and editor Caroline Sanderson in Mslexia Memoir Competition 2020.
The synopsis of Dumb was selected by agent/writer Catherine Cho to feature in the December 2020 issue of Mslexia magazine.
In recognition of the promise of her memoir in progress, Carole was awarded a place on the TLC Free Reads scheme by New Writing South, with a manuscript assessment from The Literary Consultancy. Her reader was editor Sue Lascelles, who has worked for some of the UK’s leading publishing houses, including Orion, Little, Brown, and Penguin Random House.
Carole’s piece ‘The Morning of Brexit’ was selected to feature in Who Are We Now?, a collection of true stories about Brexit edited by Katy Massey, with a foreword by Blake Morrison.
Published on Rare Disease Day, Carole’s article described how it felt when she received her son’s diagnosis.
